The team behind big navi has designed a chip called "RDNA" (short for Redundant Data Network Architecture) that replaces traditional CPUs or Central Processing Units with more efficient parallel processing units, data networks, and redundant memory modules so processes can run faster and more efficiently.
The first RDNA chip, called "R-A32", was released in 2020 and is expected to increase the performance of big Navi by up to a factor of 20x.
Many believe this change from traditional CPU architecture could make it possible for computers to surpass human intelligence.
The R-A32's design is based on a new type of computer science called "redundant data processing" which relies on redundancy and parallelism between network nodes in order to make networks more resilient, faster, and efficient at storing data.
The R-A32 is a 64-bit processor with 16 terabytes of data storage space. The chip also has two "parallel processing units" which can run independently, and process tasks in parallel.
The first RDNA architecture was invented by professor Amara Roy at the University of Chicago's Cybernetic Lab for Computational Engineering Systems (CES) in 2006 when he developed an algorithm called Hexagon that could be used to learn how to store information more efficiently on computers without requiring them to have as much memory or disk space.
The algorithms were designed so they would work better if networks had multiple nodes and redundancy built into their design - this became known as Redundant Data Processing Architecture (RDA).
The lab then created a prototype for a computer that would be capable of processing the Hexagon algorithm and was dubbed "Big Navi." The RDA prototype worked so well, it displayed an improvement in memory capacity by up to three orders of magnitude.
This is being developed as part of the US Department of Energy's Exascale Computing Project, which aims to create machines that can perform at least one billion trillion calculations per second - or exaflops.
The hope is this will eventually make them more powerful than any existing supercomputer on earth today.
Big Navi has already been tested successfully within Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) 's Titan Cray XK Supercomputer for tasks such as modelling climate change and sequencing DNA structures.
The machine completed the DNA task in just one day, which would take a conventional computer up to six days.

Ray tracing is an advanced rendering technique used to create lifelike images and high quality graphics. AMD RDNA 2 supports ray tracing in hardware by using the GPU-based Rasterizer Fundamentals (GRF) engine which can take any type of geometry, whether it's a sphere or a cube, and project rays out from that point until they hit another object on the screen.
The GRF doesn't need to know if that other object has been drawn yet; instead it just checks for intersections with what could be called "shadows" because they are being cast off the surfaces back onto themselves at different angles depending on how much light there is hitting them.
AMD RDNA 2 uses Rasterization , which is the process of generating pixels in a scene. Rasterization renders objects by drawing geometry and textures on them, but ray tracing does not use any such graphics: instead it can generate images from more abstract representations like curves or mathematical functions.

The latest member, R-Car V38XS has been announced at CES 2018 as an ARM Cortex A76 -based flagship model with dual CPU cores.
One area where AMD GPU has the high ground is the 72 computing units for the RX 6800 XT, which surpasses RTX 2080 Ti's 68. There's some interesting knowledge to note here: while RTX 3080 has 68 SM/streaming processors just like its predecessor, it also has 128 RT cores and a higher Tensor FLOP per second at 64 as opposed to 42 on RTX 2070.

The RX 6900 XT is not as powerful as the RTX 3090, which has a higher CU count and more SMs. However, it's important to mention that the Nividia RTX 3090 costs $500 more and no, that's not a typo.
The 2 new PC models, the 5450 XT and 5700 XT, come with 40 computing units each while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X boast 36 and 56 computing units respectively.
AMD claims that the RDNA 2 series will also provide a 30% increase in energy efficiency while minimizing data movement.
It's interesting to note that AMD uses 16GB across three cards, the only difference is found on the AMD RX 6700 XT which released a bit later with 12GB of VRAM.

The Nvidia RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 have a 384-bit interface, while the RTX 3070 will only support 256-bits.

The RX 6900XT is a little smaller and lighter than the RX 6870 XT. The RX 6900XT has dimensions of 257x130x44mm, which makes it 11% shorter, 25% thinner, and 30% less weighty than its predecessor.
The card's new design features an all black cover with a brushed metal look that is more attractive then the "plasticky" feel of their predecessors. AMD has also added some visual flair to the RX 6900XT by adding a splash of red color on the end caps.

First up, the RX 6800 was the most different one of the three that originally released. Aside from 60 compute units (already mentioned), it has a 2105MHz boost clock with a game frequency of 1815MHz.
The RX 6900XT is the maximum speed that can be achieved in a video game, whereas the RX 6800 XT supports this level of performance during general use.
The other two graphic cards each have a 2250MHz boost clock and a 2015MHz game clock, which is an additional notch above the competition.
The RX 6600 XT has a boost clock of 2581 MHz and a game clock frequency of 2424 MHz. This frequencies are much higher than all of the other GPUs, so they are worth paying attention to.
This GPU provides a good balance of computing units and streaming processors, so a higher clock speed can be achieved.
Microsoft® has been discussing the Xbox® Series X and quoted that the AMD RDNA 2-powered GPU's ability to offer up to 12TFLOPS of performance is an improvement over the 5700 XT's 9.75TFLOPS, but still lags behind RTX 2080 Ti™'s 14.2TFLOPS
So, instead lets compare the SNES-era PCs as to how they stack up against today's consoles in terms of clock speed.
TFLOPS performance does not always indicate the best measure of a gaming card's prowess, but it does play very important role in determining how well the card performs.
The RX 6800 XT has a peak single-precision performance of approximately 16.17 TFLOPs when compared to the RTX 3070, which only manages 17.5 TFLOPs.
However, the RX 6800 XT boasts a 20 TFLOPs performance compared to RTX 3080's 25 TFLOPs which is not enough by any means and so does the RX 6900 XT with 23 TFLOPS.
"TFLOPS" is an accurate measure of how fast a graphics card is, but the number doesn't tell the whole story. For instance, the 6900 XT has about 10% more TFLOPS than its predecessor: 6800 XT. It also performs better in some games by a small margin."
In addition, 6800 users will need 250W with a 600W recommended PSU capacity, which is significantly less than the competitors.
Lower power consumption also means less heat production, which is good news for these cards.
One DisplayPort 1.4a with DSC, a single HDMI and USB-C ports are also present.

While speaking about the RX 6000 series, AMD's senior director Laura Smith announced that this innovation was a result of people seeking improved image quality using their Radeon Cards.
She touted the RX 6800XT Infinity Cache as "graphics-optimized, high-density, high-speed cache based on Zen 3 L3 cache".
Smith stated that Infinity Cache's 256-bit GDDR6 doubles the bandwidth of a 384-bit GDDR6 solution.
Despite a slight jab at RTX 3090, Smith clarified that Infininum Cache offers 256 bits in addition to reducing power and die size.
The RTX 3090 offers a bus width of 384-bit but the memory is GDDR6X.
AMD has announced Infinity Cache, which will allow 128MB across all three graphics cards for a new product. We cannot be certain if that is appropriate or not without testing the technology more thoroughly.
The Zen 3 L3 cache is interesting because it sounds really good, but the benefits have yet to be seen.

In order to take advantage of this new technology your system need an ixgbe driver from Intel or Broadcom, since all other network interface cards do not support RX6900XT, RX68000 XT Rage Mode yet.
To enable it: select the "Enable" checkbox on the Advanced tab of device properties after selecting your ixgbe driver . RX6900XT, RX68000 XT Rage Mode will be disabled if you disable the ixgbe driver and it is not enabled by default.
Previously, this feature was exclusive to gamers who use a Ryzen 5000 series CPU with a Radeon RX 6000 series gpu which allowed the two components to interact and result in increased performance.
The AMD RX 6900XT and the AMD RX 6800 XT in tandem on its 500 series chipset motherboards can result in 13% faster performance, as has been shown by benchmarks.
The one new feature exclusively for Ryzen CPUs is Resizable Bar (AMD calls it Smart Access Memory), which speeds up loading processes and reduces memory usage. Nvidia has been working on this too, but they are still behind AMD in this specific step.
What's even more exciting is that Resizable Bar now works with CPUs from 10th and 11th generations as well as those from the Ryzen 3000 series.
However, AMD's gains are significantly higher compared to Nvidia's gains from SAM. It is still possible that driver and BIOS updates could further boost these performance increases.
AMD has provided benchmarks in which they found the Ryzen 9 5900X CPU closely matched the performance of RTX 3080.
Based on reviews of the AMD RX 6800XT, it appears that these numbers are true and In the majority of cases,the RX 6800 outperforms RTX 3080. Likewise, the RX 6900 XT is very close to the RTX 3090 in terms of performance.
However, in relation to price (AMD card being $500 more affordable) there has been a small discrepancy with how well these cards perform; AMD is justly proud while their enthusiast card does hold up voluminously against Nvidia counterparts.
Based on comparisons that AMD has made between the RX 6800 and the RTX 2080 Ti, and based on our knowledge of how well the RTX 2080 Ti performs versus the 3070, we can say for certain that the RX 6800 will compete with or beat out.

The official AMD render of the RX 6900XT confirmed that there will be a 10% IPC (instructions per clock) increase when compared to its predecessor. Leakers have stayed on the cautious side and proclaimed that at least 7% should be expected, but some believe the upgrade could reach up to 10%.
Rather than looking at leaks, we'll focus on the real information:
We noticed that, without a doubt, leaked benchmark numbers were accurate. Then again, this is not the case for Nvidia; leaks had inconsistent performance results. Clearly, this means AMD has some security issues, but in the end we benefited.
There is one leak that is worth mentioning. The June 2020 leak from an AMD internal presentation showed three slides about the RX 6900 XT. We actually covered this leak and analyzed it, but many experts determined that it was fake.
But before we go into further detail, let's recap just how accurate this was.
The first slide shows that AMD had the $999 price tag planned out way in advance and that rumors saying they would wait for Nvidia to release Ampere cards before setting the prices for big Navi were inaccurate.
It is always tough to perfect leaks, but this one was mostly accurate. The Rx 6900 XT ended up coming with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM instead than 14 GB reported in the leak.
This leak also showed us that it would have a compute unit count of 14 and TFLOPs number of 7,200--which turned out set the rumors straight.
The boost clock and game clock are both within the margin of error. This may have been fine-tuned later on in production.
The following slide compares the 4K FPS performance increase over the RTX 2080 Ti and puts it on average at around 30%, which is high considering that RX 6900XT benchmarks are more than but not by much.
Another slide boasts about AMD's implementation of ray casting, which promises a drop in power consumption. However, during the Big Navi launch event, AMD has been suspiciously eager to avoid discussing ray tracing performance.
There have been numerous sightings of a card with a RX 6900XT code. Naturally, this has caused everyone to speculate.
This year's GPU architecture update has many people wondering if it will be the next generation of AMD GPUs.
Nvidia's coveted spot as the best in graphics processing unit would be challenged if recent leaks are true. AMD's macOS 11 "Big Sur" leak appears to show a screenshot of an RX 6800XT, so this is probable but still shrouded in mystery.
It is difficult to believe that a Navi 41 code was spotted in the wild even though plans for RDNA 3 are still unknown. It's clear that RDNA 4 will be even further away from release. Some analysts think that this is a code name for AMD's new enthusiast-class GPUs.

It seems that the world had a much greater need for new graphics cards than both AMD and Nvidia anticipated. As with its chief competitor, AMD faced difficulties in meeting demand when it came time to launch, but was not as greatly affected by scalpers.
To complicate matters for AMD, the RX 6000 series is difficult to find both physically and digitally.
AMD and Nvidia are significantly increasing production of graphics cards due to increased demand.
The PC industry is seeing a slight growth of around 11% over the previous year. The sector has not experienced this kind of growth for more than 20 years.
There are many reason to consider when deciding between the RX 6900XT and the RX 6800 XT. So, we will go over what you can expect from both cards depending on your preferred level of performance/budget.
In the in-game performance section, we touched on how the Nvidia RTX 3070 fared. Now let's get more in-depth with it and talk about its competitor, AMD's Radeon RX 6800.
The RX 6800 is 10% faster than the RTX 3070 on average when tested on 1080p. At 1440p, this difference decreases to 7%. It's also worth noting that in 4K according to our test results, the RX 6800 was about 15% faster than the RTX 3070.
If the performance increase of 10% or 15% is worth $80, then this product may be for you.
There are still other element to consider, including ray tracing.
Currently, the RX 6000 series hasn't been able to match Nvidia card with ray tracing performance.
However, if you want the best ray tracing performance right now, you should purchase the RTX 3070 over an RX 6800.
In terms of power efficiency, the RX 6800 XT and 6900XT are quite similar.
If you are pairing your AMD RX 6800 with a Ryzen 3000 or 5000 CPU, you could get significantly more performance by enabling Smart Access Memory.
On paper, these numbers make it easy to suggest an AMD win. However, based on the missing ray tracing and higher price tag, this may not be the case.
RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT are pretty easy, so let's get to the numbers.
The RX 6800 XT outperforms the RTX 3080 strongly in Borderland 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Doom Eternal, and Gears of War-- but not in Division 2 and Resident Evil 3. The RTX 3080 pulls ahead where it's an outlier.
Note: 1440p is not the same as 4K.
Besides the performance differences, RX 6800 XT achieves it all with less power consumption. It also helps that its $50 cheaper at launch for what's been said to be a better product.
The AMD RX 6900 XT outperforms the RTX 3090 in 7 of 8 games tested, all but one being modern AAA titles.
Talking about the Rx 3090, it outperforms the RX 6900 XT in various games like Doom Eternal from ID Software, Resident Evil 3 and Wolfenstein: Young Blood. Still, what this shows is that AMD is able to compete with Nvidia's latest GTX card—"RX 6900 XT price", despite costing just half of its rival's tag.
AMD has made a much-needed change to the GPU world with this new card. Whether it's enough to catch up to Nvidia remains to be seen, but their fans can rejoice in knowing that they're back in the game.
